The Internet Never Forgets
This November will mark 3 years since network marketing entered my life. Leading me down a whirlwind path mixed with amazing highs and soul crushing lows
My network marketing journey definitely had its share of mistakes and fumbles along the way. Hopefully my friend and family have forgotten my crazy attempts at prospecting and the never ending stream of crappy messages and posts on Facebook.
I know I haven't forgotten...here's a few examples of my mistakes so you have an idea...
- Have you ever invited your girlfriends over for wine and cocktails and strategically have your products laid out on the table? Yep...I have.
- Here's another good (bad) one...have you ever hosted a "party" at your house and had no one show up, not even your best friend because you'd already tried to pitch them over wine...Umm Yep and more than once.
- Have you ever tried to prospect your waiter while your kids are screaming and yelling because you've been at the restaurant to long and have her respond with "ma'am I think your kids are ready to go!" Doh! Total fail...that was me.
- And the last but most damaging...Have you ever sent 50 copy and paste messages to your Facebook friends telling them how awesome your product is because that's what your upline told you to do. Unfortunately, I did this more than once...or twice...lol and Facebook put me in "jail" for it too!
That's as much as I want to share right now, because it's just making me feel bad all over again for what I've put people through...all in the name of growing my business and it's just downright embarrassing...lol!
The point is, I’m about to throw some big sticks at some networkers, but I just wanted to let you know that I’ve made big mistakes too… but that doesn’t mean we should just give a free pass to those that are making some BIG prospecting mistakes when recruiting with Facebook.
The problem with making mistakes like this is...
The Internet Never Forgets and It’s Ruining It for Everyone Else
I've been told that success in business is all about coming in at the right time and being in the right place but as a professional, I would add 'message' to that too.
Unfortunately, just like I was taught so many network marketers are being taught online prospecting methods, which include the wrong message, at the wrong time and most definitely in all the wrong places!
The REALITY is...
These human spam bots are being treated as ‘Disposable distributors’ given the job of job of messaging as many people as possible about their company’s products or opportunity, all at the expense of the person's reputation and putting themselves at risk of having their Facebook profiles shut down.
I see examples of the WRONG WAY everyday. Not a day goes by that someone doesn't spam my inbox. Here are some screenshots of crap I get every day…
The WRONG Way to Prospect and Recruit
Truly successful entrepreneurs and networkers eventually learn the true secret to success and it becomes the basis for everything they do in their business.
That secret is:
“People don’t care how much you know, until they know how much you care” – Theodore Roosevelt
The screenshots above are weak attempts by people trying to recruit with Facebook...those people haven't figured out that the key to building a business isn't finding the 'perfect' copy and past message and how many strangers you can send it to.
It’s about actually caring about people, becoming a person of value and being someone uniquely positioned to help someone with their problems.
That last part of that sentence in critical “uniquely positioned to help someone with their problems.”
What will set you apart from everyone else out there?
I'm not saying that prospecting online doesn't work. I am actually here to tell you it can work...but just like any other skill it takes effort and time to learn to do it right. And if it's the strategy you want to use then you need to do it right or else!
But if you’re still not sure on whether you are a spammer or not, here’s an easy little breakdown for you...
Top 5 Warning Signs That Your Prospecting Efforts are Actually SPAM
1) You first private message to a stranger on social media includes a link to join your opportunity.
2) You get angry replies via private messaging and/or you have been reported as a spammer.
3) You post links to your opportunity or website in the comments section of other people’s social media posts
4) You compulsively want to talk about your company or products, without anyone asking you to share.
Finally… this one is the most important one…
5) You engage in interactions online, with a hidden agenda, hoping to transition the topic to something that would get people interested in your opportunity, without caring about getting to know the other person.
This one is huge but is also controversial.
Because really, #5 is the very definition of prospecting (online or offline), which even when done right… can still feel awkward and result in people getting angry at you. This is exactly why I needed to find another way, so I could stop prospecting all together.
But here’s the interesting thing…
When I Stopped aggressively Prospecting People, My Business Started Growing
I can’t tell you how relieved I felt being able to have my friends over, visiting with family or just being out in public without having to think about prospecting anyone.
Just being able to be a 'normal' person again was so relieving. Especially after a year of being taught by my upline that “everyone was a prospect” and approaching every conversation with a hidden agenda, I was free!
When I STOPPED prospecting, my business actually started growing!
Totally weird, right?
So now you're asking, “then how the hell did your business grow?”
Before I answer that, I want to say that there are master prospectors and recruiters out there who completely ignore the issues I mentioned above.
They knowingly and without shame, approach every interaction with a stranger as a prospecting opportunity.
They don't care about getting yelled at or cussed out by prospects, as long as some say ‘yes.’
The problem with how prospecting is typically taught is that it is still all about what YOU want people to do and about trying to manipulate them into doing just that.
In other words, it’s about YOU, not them. I didn’t like that, but I still did it… until I found a better way.
The More Leveraged Alternative to 1 on 1 Prospecting, Which Won’t Make You Feel Like a Cheap Sales Man
Now, I am not trying to be like a queen on her throne about prospecting, because I’m not.
If it came down to feeding my family with ‘stone cold’ prospecting tactics or my kids starving, I choose stone cold prospecting every time, without remorse.
But the reason I was able to quit prospecting was because, with the help of some seriously amazing mentors, I discovered an online recruiting strategy, which…
Allowed me to recruit more people in 1 Day, than the best prospector can do in 1 month. I was able to passively generate leads, customers and new distributors – even when I was out having fun with my kids on the beach.
(This is why I didn’t have to worry about prospecting them!)
Rather than spending hours spamming or private messaging people on social media, I learned how to actually get Facebook to actually help me attract people who are actually interested in what I have to offer, just by using their ads platform! (i.e. going legit!)
In fact, every day for almost 9 months now, I’ve awoken to an email inbox full of notifications for new leads, new customers, new team members and commissions I earned while sleeping!
This strategy is called ‘attraction marketing’, which is an internet marketing strategy designed for networkers and people in direct sales!
You see, if your business depends on you being on social media, sending private messages or commenting on people’s posts all day, you are NOT doing internet marketing… despite what you may have been led to believe.
Online prospecting and internet marketing are NOT the same thing!
If you want to learn how it works, I actually reveal the entire strategy I’ve used and my mentors have used, in a free 10-Day Online Recruiting Bootcamp available here.
You’ll also get more details about a book my mentor, Ferny Ceballos, wrote. In it he goes over the nuts n' bolts of his recruiting and selling formula that I'm using right now.
Now if traditional prospecting online or offline is your thing and you want to stick to that, by all means, go for it.
There are many top trainers and earners in the industry that focus on cold market recruiting skills…but you know their secret...
(they do ‘attraction marketing’ too!)
For me, I just wanted to be able to have true time freedom and be able to enjoy the precious time I had with my kids and actually enjoy my business.
I would much rather make a bunch of money first and then have my friends and family beg me to tell them more about it it!
I like that way a whole lot better than bugging and begging my friends and family to join a business that isn't making any money.
What would you rather do?
